Our work in the specialty chemical sector began in 1977, just a year after Coating Place was founded. By 1983, we were developing encapsulated breaker products specifically for hydraulic fracturing, a breakthrough in the oil field service market.
Our encapsulated breakers have been essential to enhancing performance and efficiency in the oil field industry. These breakers delay the release of active materials, allowing them to withstand extreme downhole temperatures before activation.
The Sauk City Facility: Industrial Precision at Scale
Our 110,000-square-foot Sauk City location exemplifies Coating Place’s commitment to manufacturing excellence. Originally built in 1948 as the Wisconsin Creamery Company Cooperative, the facility has undergone several transformations before and after being acquired by Coating Place in 2012.
Now, this advanced facility houses 7 Wurster fluid bed coating systems, packaging, cold storage, a spinning disk, and other support services. A key area of focus for this facility is the production of Encap™ products for industrial markets, ensuring optimal control, scalability, and consistency across every batch.

How Encapsulation Enhances Efficiency
The science behind microencapsulation in hydraulic fracturing lies in controlling the timing and environment in which the breaker is activated. In this application, a highly viscous gel with a proppant, typically sand, is injected into a well bore to produce fractures in the rock. This viscosity ensures the fractures remain open long enough to be productive.
Our Encap™ breakers are introduced to the fluid with a delayed-release mechanism, allowing the gel to maintain its viscosity during fracturing and only reduce once the proppant has settled in place. This control reduces premature viscosity breakdown and improves oil and gas recovery rates. Such precision wouldn’t be possible without advanced Wurster fluid bed coating technology, which ensures uniform coating thickness and dependable release profiles.
